Prior to 9.0 you needed another utility, wow mapper to get the controller input to work. They are developing a ConsolePort2 add on that will utilize the native game pad support, it has a targeted release of “before shadowlands”. You can still use CP + wowmapper till then.

There are a few tiny bugs but it works great once you set it up. I played wow classic a bit with a controller. I used an xbox controller and had to install wowmapper and used console port addon. It was awkward for me to set up because I was playing on already leveled characters!
